The best way to make your films looks cinematic is lighting but what if you don't have the correct lights and set up? There is ways around not having lights. one of the best ways to have correct lighting is to use natural light. your scene should show emotion based on what the film I on, like a dark ally for a creepy feeling in you film or a field full of flowers for a soft joyful feeling. colors play a huge art in making your film look cinematic. Highlighting a certain object in the back ground can show emphasis on an object with a meaning or make your character stand out so your eyes naturally focus in them.
This article was by far not my favorite, lighting isn't my favorite subject but I do agree with making your back ground seam interesting and have it be able to set the mood for the film. it wouldn't make sense having a scary movie shot in soft happy lighting, it only makes sense to set the mood before filming.
