this week was another super productive week, I got a lot done but I still feel like I wont be finished in time. we had another animate pro quiz, Tuesday I think. we also had a 3d math lesson wish was fairly easy.
what I learned- well, I learned how to break down a 3d shape into different angels, also learned how to draw a 3d shape from different angles and how to apply them to dot and triangle paper.
what I want to learn- I'm really eager to get into 3d animation. I really want to begin to learn the basics. I think its going to be harder than 2d but hopefully ill like it.
some thing that frustrated me- well Friday Lockport had to take three busses to get to boces. Lockport is only 15 minuets or so away from boces. Lockport is usually the first or second to arrive at boces instead we ended up being late because of a broken bus, and a crazy bus driver who half way to boces she decided that she had had enough and called in for another bus to take us the rest of the way to boces. and I'm not going to have enough time to finish all my blogs because of to much homework
some thing that made me happy- I did get to go Christmas shopping this week end and picked out some nice things even know I have to wait until Christmas to get them. I'm also happy to finally be done with my history project it took up most of my day leaving not much time for blogs.
link of interest time- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyNqScIMYFE&list=UUFtM8Vl0VwKeEMSCdJ5EjAQ this is a link to an animated series one of my favorite animators is doing, there is only one episode out and I'm eager to see more.

5 Techniques That Create Depth & Make Your Cinematography More Dynamic
cinematographers are known for creating an allusion of depth by using different techniques, five of the most important include: high contrast lighting, focus, perspective, parallax and occlusion.
High contrast lighting- good lighting is important in a good film, what is the theme of the movie? try to match the therewith a certain kind of lighting. good lighting will add depth, shadows can also add depth. soft lighting may make it seam flat or almost boring.
Focus- using shallow depth of field is the same thing that our eyes focus on, when some thing or some one is near you. the brain interprets this as depth.
perspective- you can make your shot feel much more dramatic if you are using different vertices. also changing you camera angel can show who has more power in a n argument or even foreshadow some thing that is about to happen. different perspectives will make it much more interesting as well.
parallax- make your shot more dramatic add some blur or shake, make the camera move this will not only make your shot seam more interesting but also add depth into your shot.
occlusion- have objects in front of others even if they are only in the back ground this will also add the illusion of depth and will also make the backgrounds much more interesting.
I feel like this article went over the bare minimum, and could have ben more helpful if they described the five tips even more in depth and also added more places these tips could have ben used. I also feel like most people would already know about these tips and is almost just common sense to add these things in films, there seen all the time in movies.

Why Animation Continues to Thrive as an Art Form and an Industry
Animation is continuing to grow providing jobs all around the world. In 2002 the academy awards added a category called best animation feature. the movie Shrek was the very first film to be recognized to this category. before this award was offered they believed that there was just to few animated movies up for consideration. how ever they did award an occasional film with a special achievement award. animated movies can also attract a wide variety of viewers, allowing them to make more money not targeting one certain age group. studios have noticed how well animated movies are doing and have increased the amount of animated films that they put out. more and more animation studios have been creating animated films opening up for more job opportunities.
I'm glad to see that animation is growing, I've always been interested in animated films rather than live action films even to this day. you can show so much more emotions when its animated. its great seeing older people and children all watching one film with out it being meant for just children. I think that not targeting an age group is great. its also wonderful to see that more and more animation studios have ben putting out animations creating new jobs that hopefully ill be a part of one day.

Weekly comments #9..?
This week was all work days except having one quiz, and also got to pick our secret Santa names. I hope they like what I got them.. again this week was very productive. I got a lot done on my 2d short but I realize I have a long way to go before its finished. I'm going to have to work quite a bit at home if I want to finish this. Unfortunately I haven't gotten animate pro off my old laptop and put onto my new desk top yet so ill have to figure that out before any work gets done at home.
what I learned- I've learned that not using your time wisely gets you far behind. like I am.. I was extremely focused on small details but I need to work on getting the main part of my animation done then go back for the details.
what I want to learn- ide like to learn how to draw characters better from all angles so that they actually look like them same character instead of some one totally different, but practice makes perfect so I'm improving slowly.
some thing that frustrated me- some thing that has frustrated me for a while is not being able to do work out side of school and not having time. my schedule is usually very full especially now with working on getting a job and being the "artistic" one, having to decorated every ones houses for the holidays. plus I'm also stuck on the bus for an hour on my way home from Boces even know we go right past my street on the way to Lockport high school. I end up being the third from last person to get home.
Some thing that made me happy- some thing that really made me happy this week was getting a good chunk of animation done. I also enjoyed no animate pro problems, yay! plus as a bonus I got to go Christmas shopping this weekend and picked out a few things I've been wanting.
well, I originally found this video because it was always in my recommendations no matter what I was watching or listening to on YouTube, so I thought, eh why not... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO7BfUKmheo&index=2&list=PLRdh6KkXnvI3VrdKyVjJDurBq5arfVoQh this is basically an animation about an extremely friendly demon is supposed to be tormenting a high school student, but isn't very good at it.

references.
Animators every where use references from some thing simple getting an eye to look right to drawing out a full character. there are tons of different references out there for animators including, photography, comic books, flash photography and even frottage of some one preforming an action. using a reference is essential especially to an animation student to learn from. its a know fact that just about every animator uses a reference hear and there, weather is a photo or a movie or a drawing. in Dr. Harold Edgerton. His book “Stopping Time” he shows flash photography, where he captures an action or movement and has individual frames during important parts to show movement.
I believe using a reference can be very helpful as long as your not copying some one else's work exactly. I've seen people take credit for some one else's work by changing the color or a few lines here and there, that's not right. I also think that live action references can be the most helpful, seeing how a person actually walks or talks can be super helpful when trying to get realistic movement.

This week we mainly got to work on our 2d shorts, we had a notebook check and a couple demos. I also got to voice act for the first time, even know it was only one line. we were also supposed to have a field trip Wednesday but it got move to Monday because of the snow.
some thing that made me happy- some thing that made me happy this week was being able to voice act for the very first time, and actually learned how to use voice recorders. another thing is we got to learn how to do different effects in animate pro. I also got little big planet 3 which is super cute.
some thing that frustrated me- some thing that frustrated me this week is realizing that my 2d short is pretty long and hopefully ill be able to finish it, I may have to work on some of at home.
some thing I want to learn- well I think we've learned just about every thing about 2d animation guess its time to move to 3d pretty soon!
Yay~ link time... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFRsni7V6wg ... this link shows a few tips and tricks when voice acting. these tips can be super helpful when getting the best results.

This week we finished out six second club aka the cut out animation. This animation was my favorite so far, we had a while to do it so I got to add lots of detail and I'm happy the way mine turned out. I think puppet animation would be good to use along with 2d and I plan to use both in our upcoming 2d short.
some thing that made me happy- some thing that made me happy this week is getting to do cut out animation, doing different types of animation will help me improve with animation in general. I also got the animators survival kit book and a new computer this week, so hopefully ill be able to work on animation at home also.
some thing that frustrated me- some thing that really frustrated me this week was the story board for the 2d short. I had a really hard time thinking of some thing to do for the 2d short. I finally came up with some thing, but I wish I could have done better.
some thing I want to learn- some thing id really like to learn is how to do different effects in animation like blur and shake. these would be great to use in the 2d short, i'm sure other people would like to learn this too.
yay link time-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJY6fpoWYRw this link is an upcoming movie called almost home, this movie is about a group of cute aliens who are just looking for a new home and run into some interesting creatures and planets along the way.

Psychology of scary movies
This article and video talk about what horror really is and tells why people are attracted to horror movies rather than horror documentaries. Over the years many people have done research on why people enjoy horror movies. There are many unfinished theories of why we enjoy horror movies.
I found this article to be very interesting, especially the part where Haidt McCauley and Rozin conducted research on disgust in 1994 when they showed students series of gruesome documentary videos. Many of the students could not watch all of the video because they knew it was real. but students will pay to see horror movies, that show the same things and even worse but they know that it isn't real and gives the viewers a scene of ease.

ten storyboard tips.
This link shows ten helpful trick when it comes to creating storyboards. These tips apply to both animation and live-action film. Grids can be very helpful when trying to get a scene of space and camera position. It may be hard to figure out where some thing is standing in the scene with out a grid. Using items in the background, foreground and mid ground can give the storyboard depth and show the actual size of some thing and where it is in the scene. Another helpful tip is grouping characters together so that you wont have to cut back and forth between characters so often. Camera angles can also help to show how tall or short a character is. some one tall would have a higher camera angle looking down, and a shorter character would have a camera angel lower looking up.
One of the most important tips in my own opinion is show motivation for cuts. having some thing move or make a sound will show what some one is looking at or reacting to.

First off i hope every one had a happy Halloween! This week was mostly work days, which means our 11 second animation is finally finished. This animation is one of the longest we have done so far. not to mention having to listen to "Don't eat the car" forwards and backwards. over all i think my animation turned out pretty well, i wish we would have had one more day just so i could go back and fix a few minor details and play with the camera angels a bit more.
Some thing that made me happy- Well, Halloween for starters. Its my favorite holiday. Being done with the 11 second club animation is also great. I thought lip syncing would be a lot harder than it really is. I actually enjoyed making this animation despite having to listen to the audio clip over and over.
Some thing that frustrated me- some thing that frustrated me this week was running out of time on the 11 second club animation. i wish i had a bit more time to go back and tweak some angels and some of the cut scenes that went by to fast. I know a few other people didn't have time to hand there's in on time. Mine got handed in right before the bell.
Some thing i want to learn- some thing I'd like to learn is how draw more realistically, I mainly draw animals and super cartoon-ish things. i also would like to learn how to draw humans better. eyes and noses especially.
Link of interest- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfeasT5u4uI This link is just a simple for legged animation of a pug. some people may want the extra credit for the walk cycle. There are tons of different styles of walk cycles depending on the animal.

Physics and animation!
physics apply to animation in every way. physics is super important when making realistic 2d and 3d animation. Ron Henderson is director of the dream-works research and development team, helps research ways to make animations more realistic and how to add physics into every animation. one think Henderson has researched is bubbles, and how they react with different objects and materials. so that they could make them super realistic they had a live demonstration of people blowing bubbles.
this article was a lot to and didn't explain to much, i feel like it could have used a video or two, to actually show what they were talking about. studding physics... and bubbles is not my ideal job. although physics is super important in animation in every way and i didnt know they hired some one to do this. there are many different jobs in animation, some big some small.

Lesson from lecter
I found this article/ video to be really interesting. the different small details going into camera angles can show how people are feeling or who is winning an argument. eyes are key when winning the scene. eyes looking right into the camera at equal heights shows equal power. when one person is looking down on the other person it shows that they have more power than the person looking up on them. camera angels can also be used as what a person is seeing.
this video is really cool when explained but i think if i was just watching this movie i wouldn't have noticed that this is what they were trying to do. to me it just seams like a normal(ish) conversation. i didn't notice that the angels of the camera are showing who has more power in an argument, one was told to sit so they did. yet it is interesting seeing this scene of the movie explained

what we learned this week- this week we learned how to animate a flower sack. it was really fun at first but i started to run out of time and rushed threw the ending. It was defiantly not my best animation. Now we are working on our 11 second club lip sinc animation. i can basically hear don't eat the car! not the car in my sleep now, but hopefully it will be over with soon. Boces was also closed Friday which really sucked but it was nice getting to leave early, no two hour bus ride.
some thing that made me happy- some thing that made me happy this week was finally being done with the flower sac, it was just one of those animations where i just could not get the movement right. i spent way to much detail on other things than the actually flower sack, and procrastinated the entire time.
some thing that frustrated me- some thing that frustrated me this week was having to listen to the 11 second "don't eat the car"audio over and over trying to get the mouth to move in the right spots. just knowing that i'm going to have to listen to that until Thursday, i just know ill dream of it.
Some thing i want to learn- some thing i want to learn is how to do cut out puppet animation. 2d animation has always been my favorite and have preferred it over everything but i think that doing different forms of animation will help me improve in 2d animation.
Link of interest- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VufDd-QL1c0 this link is animator vs. animation, i actually saw this for the first time yesterday and thought it was really neat. I'm sure a lot of people already knew about this. Not only is it super smooth but has audio and is a fairly long video.

The hidden mic.
In this post Izzy Hyman shows us seven different ways to hide a lav mic so that you can still clearly hear it. A lav mic is basically a small mic that can be can warn to enhance sound when recorded. Hyman explains different ways to hide the mic behind a tie, in a shirt and in other places where sound can still be herd but not be muffled or interfered by clothing or hair.
I think this advice can be very helpful for some one who is recording audio or doing an interview. These techniques are creative yet work well.

what we learned this week- this week we finished up our walk cycle and dive animation. we also started on our flower sack animation which is a lot harder than it looks. last Friday we took a field trip to villa maria collage. They gave us lunch and took us for a too and we got to an animation workshop thing. villa maria seams like a very nice collage and i may apply there when the time is right.
what i want to learn- i want to learn how to how to add different details into my animations, like the blur effect and how to add sound.
some thing that made me mad- some thing that frustrated me this week is trying the get the the flower sack animation look realistic.
some thing that made me happy- some thing that made me happy this week is getting to go on a field trip and meeting the the morning class, its nice meeting people have have similar interests as me.

what we learned- This week we learned the basics of animation. we animated a pendulum, different types of bouncing balls, a balloon and a bowling ball. we also had a physics lesson and a quiz on physics.
what i want to learn- i want to learn how to animate to music or sounds. i also want t learn how to lip sinc and make a 2 legged and 4 legged run cycle.
some thing that made me mad- some thing that made mad this week was repetitive ball bounce exercise. i had made a bouncing ball with an animal inside taking up the entire space of the inside of the ball. but some how an error occurred when i saved it and only the background saved and of course this was one of the only times i didn't bother to back it up so i started over with just a simple red ball.
some thing that made me happy- some thing that made me happy this week was not getting a lot of homework. i didn't have much homework in Boces or at the high school. I also liked that we got to learn how to frame by frame animate, and i did enjoy doing it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGxDQRBKFZI this link shows a few of the super small details that made the movie coraline look amazing. this movie must have taken forever to make and needed a lot of patience.

Cloudy with a (big) chance of animation principles.
Squash and Stretch- is shown when different foods are falling from the sky and hitting the ground, squishing then stretching and bouncing back up. This principle is used quite a bit in this movie. squash and stretch is used to show different weights and what some thing is made out of.
Anticipation- when flint is waiting for the foods to come out of the machine with his hands under it. this principle is also used quite a bit when the people are waiting for food to land. anticipation is used to prepare the audience for an action.
Staging- when the mayor is talking to the people of the town before unavailing sardine land. Staging is used to direct the audiences attention to make it clear clear of what is going to happen.
arcs- is shown when flint is running. flints legs are long so the arcs are large. an arc is some thing that follows a half circle pattern.
exaggeration- is shown with the heads and body proportion of all the characters. This principle is shown most often in this movie. this gives the movie character and makes it more cartoon-ish and appealing.
slow in and outs- this is shown when flint is running past the mayor and crowd of people ducking so no one would see him with his machine. slow in and outs is the movement of the human body, and most other objects needs time to accelerate and slow down. for this reason animation looks more realistic if it has more drawings near the beginning and end of an action. Emphasizing the extreme poses and fewer in the middle.

The Man Who Brought Stop-Motion Animation Into the 21st Century
Travis Knight, the lead stop motion animation artist at Laika and his team have been putting together another stunning stop motion animation called Boxtrolls. Boxtrolls has the same kind of creepy feel as his other Oscar nominated movies including Coraline and ParaNorman. The team at Laika continues to come up with new ways to make rapid prototyping and 3D printing in the puppets faces better and better. Knight has found a way to combine stop motion animation with computer generated effects and the results have been amazing as showing in Coraline and ParaNorman Each stop motion animation Travis knight works on, he applies those skills to the next animation so that they become better and more advanced.
Boxtrolls is a new stop motion animation about a boy names eggs who is adopted by boxtrolls. the people of the town believe that boxtrolls are dangerous and are trying to get rid of them. eggs is on a mission to save his adopted family and prove that boxtrolls are harmless.
i was very excited when i saw that the link was about the Boxtrolls. I actually got to see the boxtrolls on Saturday night at the drive-in. i love the style they use in these stop motion animations and thinking of how long it must have taken to make this movie is amazing. personally i don't think i could have the patience to make a movie like this. Coraline is actually one of my favorite movies and it was cool finding out that the same people made the Boxtrolls and ParaNorman.

Michael Moore
Oscar winning and globally acclaimed documentary filmmaker Michael Moore explains that "laughter is a way to alleviate the pain of what you know to be true". Moore calls him self a filmmaker and thinks of his documentaries as movies. If he wanted to speech at people of lecture he would have became a politician or teacher. People don't want to be lectured to they want to be entertained he explains. Always give viewers new information that they didn't know. No one would want to see a documentaries of things they already knew. How do you react to the documentary? the viewers will react the same way as you do.
I think Michael Moore has an interesting way of creating documentaries. He looks at them as if they were movies, but that's how be became so successful. Moore follows 13 steps when he is making a new documentary.

Hullabaloo~
Disney veterans have been putting together a 2D steam punk animation called Hullabaloo. 2D animation is slowly becoming extincted. Now a days people have been focusing mainly on 3D animations. The animation team has put together a donation box that will help put together shorts of the animation. If the shorts take off they could turn into a television series or even a feature-length film. 2D animation would be on its way back directly by its devoted fans.
I believe that Hullabaloo will become some thing amazing. a lot of people prefer 2d animation including myself, and its sad to see it fading out. Hullabaloo combines two of my favorite things, 2D animation and steam punk. I am definitely interested in this animation and hopes it becomes very successful.

This week we learned a lot about color and the five major principles of design. there were two different small projects in animate pro. The first one was on design principles, and the second one was on color theory. we also got to finish up our character drawings in animate pro and handed them in along with our hand drawn flip books. We received our first notebook grade and got our grades for our character drawing.
something i would like to learn in the future is how to make better shadows and highlights in animate pro. i'm still so used to paint tools.
some thing that frustrated me this week was the colors in my flip book kept smudging and it became a bit sloppy. i also had to draw on my window quite a bit so things didn't jump around as much.
some thing that made me happy this week is seeing every one's art up on the bulletin bored. i like seeing every ones different styles and abilities.

6 Tips~
6 tips in an article telling what the recruiters expect from animators who are submitting work to a company. 30 seconds is all you get when a recruiter is looking over your reel. 6 tips says to be short and to the point and not to overlook details. They also say that recruiter wont want to see every animation you've worked on, they would rather see one to two really strong animations you've worked on in school.
6 tips gives animators an advantage in knowing what the recruiter are looking for. However it can take away from the creative process because people will alter there work trying to impress the recruiter, taking away from there real creativity. People should be totally original when creating some thing new. There will always be recruiters out there who are looking for people who can be creative and go in there own direction, not caring what others think.

"The Order 1886"
"The Order 1886" is a new video game for play station 4 that will be released in 2015. Video game developers at Ready At Dawn have made the game to have similar features as a movie would and have been working on it since 2010. They have replicated the physical lenses that are used in photography into the game so that the game has specific depth field of focus. They also had to replicate small details including lens curvature and lens dirt. Many games have a sterile CGI on life but by adding different forms of cinematography the game can look real, just like your eyes would see it.
I think 'The Order 1886" will be a successful game. The graphics in the game are incredible. I believe that more and more games will start using cinematography and adding details that makes the game look so real. video games have came a long way from being large chunky pixel to now looking like actual movies.

This week we've learned a lot of amazing things. The size of my notebook that must mean we learned a lot right? Ha, well we did! From sitting in a chair the proper way... to the basics of drawing in animate pro and many things in between. including the history of animation and even a math lesson with fractions and decimals. (ewww) We also got to actually turn our computers on and realize that many tings are annoying and different coming form a windows user. we also have had a few quizzes that i did fairly well on. This week was jammed packed of packets of notes and projects that will come in handy in the long run. we got to use the scanner and make our traditional art become digital. when walking back to the scanner you realize that every one has there different styles of art. i think its amazing to see how everyone works differently. This week we also got to look at all the animation occupations and visual effects occupations. Every job is super important in the over all project they may be working on. so every one must work as a team.
Some things i want to learn in the future is how to better draw in animate pro since i'm used to working with paint tools its a bit hard to transfer over. Another thing i really want to learn is how to actually animate of coarse. I've done a few small animations but noting that great.
Some thing that frustrated me this week getting used to animate pro all the different tools and everything. im used to paint tools where you can turn and rotate and zoom and shade. the shading in animate pro is some thing than frustrated me the most because i haven't yet figured out how to do it. Its also hard to convert over to mac when your used to windows.
some thing that made me happy this week is getting to meet everyone in the class who all have similar interests as i do. everyone's personalities are awesome and getting to come to Boces and work with everyone is amazing. Its by far my favorite class out of my 11 years of school.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z_k2z5m6H0 This link shows the CGI breakdown of a scene in Disney's frozen.i found this link interesting because it shows the different steps they went threw just to get one small scene look good. It makes you realize how long it must have taken to make this movie to look amazing.
